GCSE
At the end of Year 11 we enter candidates for Edexcel's IGCSE examination. This is a 2-Tier exam, with Higher Tier covering grades A*-D, and Foundation Tier having a maximum of a grade C.
Most students at BMS will be entered for the Higher Tier; final decisions will be made after the trial exams in the January of Year 11.
Assessment is by two exam papers - there is no coursework.
Those who achieve high grades will have had a good preparation to study Maths A Level in the Sixth Form. Members of set 1, in particular, will study topics beyond GCSE, and may have the opportunity to sit OCR's Additional Maths exam.
From Year 8 Maths is taught in sets across the whole year group; different sets inevitably progress at different rates through the syllabus, and we will carefully select the topics taught to those who find the subject difficult.
