The Mathematics Faculty

The Mathematics Faculty consists of 1 part-time and 9 full-time mathematicians, all of whom teach across the age and ability range.

In year 7 students are initially taught in non-selective groups as for other subjects, so that the department can assess each student's abilities. By the end of the autumn term students are placed into sets, and setting continues through to GCSE, those needing more help with the subject being taught in (progressively) smaller groups.
It is the department's firm policy to stretch our most able Mathematicians. Students in the highest set will study topics beyond GCSE, and will be given the opportunity to sit the OCR Additional Mathematics paper at the end of year 11.

Mathematics is a popular sixth form subject, available in combination with most other subjects; the most able take both Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level. Lecture trips are arranged to Oxford, Cambridge, London, and the Open University.

The department makes use of ICT in the delivery of the curriculum, with projectors in each teaching room and access to a set of laptops; the school subscribes to the web-base MyMaths resource and software includes Omnigraph, DART Maths, and Virtual Image.

As a department we believe that Mathematics can be fun and students are given a variety of puzzles and problems to solve. A large number are also entered for the various National Mathematics Contests, with good results being achieved. Students are regularly invited to the follow-up rounds of these competitions.
